Karter was born with a heart defect in 2012. He had to have open heart surgery at one week old and then a heart catheterization done at age 1. For the last 12 years, Karter has, thankfully, been asymptomatic with no heart issues.
Unfortunately this has recently changed. During a Basketball game Karter had some unusual symptoms that led to several rounds of testing. After many tests, doctors visits, and a recent heart catheterization, unfortunately they have found that Karter's heart arteries are not pumping blood to his heart effectively. This means that left untreated, Karter will always be at an increased risk of a heart attack. Karter's family is currently working with doctors from Houston that specialize in abnormal heart arteries to see what options are available to him. The options currently on the table range from bypass surgery, a permanent defibrillator, or possibly heart transplant.
